Drawing of the main character, Galen, striking a pose. Comes a bit later on in the comic, obviously... This drawing was done to both create a promo image and to work out a fast way to paint backgrounds that looked decent.

A sketch I did that got wildly out of control. :-P
Model Sheets:

This is Galen's bow, his quiver, and his thumb ring. Longbows are so common in fantasy fiction that I wanted something a bit different, so I went for a Magyar inspired recurve composite bow, drawn with the thumb, a Mongolian draw, rather than the more common three finger Mediteranian draw. Hence the thumb ring, and why the arrow is on the right side of the bow. You can see the very rough sketches that led up to this down in the sketches section.

Mostly, this model sheet is just for people to try and get a feel for the character, I don't need the model sheet. Except for his butt-spots, you better believe I am copy-pasting those. :p

Brom is aggressively and infectiously cheerful and optimistic. He is also kind of a flirt, a ladies man. He likes to help others and tends to adopt a lot of problem cases, and he's attracted to people he sees as puzzles to be solved.
Sketches:

I was watching TV. Sketches appeared. They are sketches of Lófi, mostly because his hair is fun to draw (c'mon, dreadlocked tail, that's cool!) Still have not decided what his tattoos will look like.... I know he will have some tattoos, you can see I was playing with a pictish design for the back of his neck/shoulders and I think that may stay. But the rest... still dunno. But I think I like the wrap/toga-ish sort of thing he's got ging on for a 'shirt' - clothes are hard to design for centaurs....

Lófi. I am not going to say exactly what his role is just yet, but I will say that though he started out in a (very) minor role, I grew to like him a lot, so I think he'll be popping up from time to time. He didn' have a scar in my head, (about all i knew was 'dreadlocks, and cocky as all hell') but when doing the portrait, he needed a scar. That squiggly line on his shoulder - he has a tattoo, but I don't know exactly what it looks like yet, that's just where it will be once i figure that out.

This is Sean, he and Galen have known eachother since they were children. He's a tailor, like his parents, (he runs the family business) but he hates it, and he's actually not terribly good at sewing, he gets a servant to do the actual sewing, while he mans the shop. I think he's just looking for an excuse to run off and so something exciting, if you ask me...

Theren is Galen's older brother. While Galen had the brains, Theren had the brawn, and in a family of clerical workers/scribes, that made him a bit of a black sheep. He was shipped off to join a holy order at a young age by his parents.
While the others got ruidmentery hints of clothing at best, I actually spent a fair bit of time on his armor. while it was important that he bear a botherly resemblence to Galen, as a member of a holy order, it was also important that his armor be suitably impressive.

Jóarr here is Brom's cousin. He's quite the shy and quiet type. As for the odd streak down the middle of his face, he is a centaur, so that's why. It's like a blaze on a horses face.

A girl named Astrid who lives in Naktergaal... what her role is, I'm not going to say just yet.

Briar is one of Brom's (many) older sisters, it was a bit of a challenge to get her looking feminine with the feathered feet and draft-type body. But since Brom has that drafty type look to him, she had to have it too since they are siblings.

Sketch of a girl. I know who she is, but not going to say just yet, but I liked the drawing.

Sketches designing a hood/cloak for Galen. elves in general, really. Those damn ears...

Brom posing all beefcake like. I actually started doing this as a finished drawing, but never got around to finishing... should do that.

Sketches of Galen's bow. Longbows are so common in fantasy fiction that I wanted something a bit different, so I went for a Magyar inspired recurve bow, drawn with the thumb rather than the more common three finger Mediteranian draw. Hence the thumb ring.

Assorted sketches, I liked the guy in the top corner. He will be a guard in the beginning of the story.

Sketches to work out helmets, armor, and a dress jacket... and a random full body shot, trying to get as 'race horse' as possible. Proportions are a bit wonky though, will fix in the nice version.

A sketch I did that got wildly out of control. :-P this is Brom's cousin, Jóarr. He's a splash overo pinto, and the white extends to his arms/head.

Rough drawings of Brom. He's a pretty difficult chracter to draw and keep on-model...

Rough drawings of gaits... trying to figure out what the hell the arms and torso would be doing while doing some basic horse gaits. Click the toolbar above to expand, it's an extremely tall picture.

Rough concept sketches of Marie.

Lineup for body type and height comparison purposes of several of the major characters.

Semirough sketches of Galen, working out the final proportions of his face.

Rough sketches of Galen, working out a few expressions.

Rough drawings of the two main characters, Galen and Brom, trying to work out some of the more unusual poses and anatomy.... They will be clothed in the comic (sorry ladies) but it's easier to work out this sort of stuff with no clothes.

Drawing of Galen to work out the pattern of his butt-spots. :-P

Rough clothing designs of the two main characters, Galen and Brom.

Very old character concept for Galen, back when his name was Aetius. Most things remain fairly similar, but it's been refined quite a bit since then.

The VERY FIRST drawing of Galen, after I had a series of dreams (which bear little resemblence to the current story in most respects) with him and Brom as characters, which was unusual since my dreams are usually you know, about me, and centaurs had never really interested me. As you can see I didn't have a CLUE how to draw horses hooves at this point. The horse anatomy is, frankly, laughable. But you can see he's had that odd woven leather armor from day one, pretty much unchanged. The only things that really changed significantly are that he got socks on his back feet, and his ears got MUCH bigger. Everything else was so solid in my mind (for Brom as well, though i didn't draw him until later) that the design has drifted very little.
